Debido a las dificultades que hab\u00eda para hacer un muelle en condiciones y con la debida protecci\u00f3n, el ingeniero Jer\u00f3nimo Mines (1610), propuso el vaciando la plaza para hacer un puerto artificial. La idea era que toda la piedra para la construcci\u00f3n de viviendas en el Valle de La Orotava se sacara del llamado \u201cCharco de los Camarones\u201d, y as\u00ed, de forma natural y progresiva, se ir\u00eda abriendo un muelle.
